Communications is a tendency towards separating interaction from location, or moving away from the physical body as a matter of importance. Where next for it?
According to Richard Cupidi, the first really revolutionary comms system was the telephone, as it combined instantaneity with complete arbitration of location. So long as a phone was there, the speakers could be anywhere in the world. Of course, it also had scale, which is needed for something to be revolutionary as well. A tin-can and string may start the concept (or perhaps merely shouting), but neither scales.
