*Pros of CCTV
*
- Obviously troublesome situations can be seen quickly (assuming someone is watching) and authorities can intervene earlier than usual, avoiding more serious trouble. See this BBC article.
- People are less likely to cause trouble if they know (and care) that they are being watched.
*Cons of CCTV
*
- Intelligent trouble (i.e. when people know and care about being watched) may merely be displaced.
- Troublesome outbreaks are possibly just a symptom of problems elsewhere. Avoiding the serious effects here may do nothing to address issues (or symptoms) elsewhere.
- The definition of "troublesome" can easily be defined by those watching via CCTV. Who defines the rules?
- Unease over being watched combined with unknown rules can lead to a lowest-common-denominator society. See The Church Of Diversity.
A false illusion of scope - see this post on Surveillance and its Effects.
