Language Is Culture

created 2006-04-10 00:03:17

(Up to: Language )

This comes out of reading the translation notes to Dante's Inferno, but also from various translations, and the approaches ot those translations, of texts such as the Tao Te Ching. In all of these notes, the acknowledgement is made that any translation cannot capture the same sprit of the original.

But if spirit cannot transcend language, then culture must also be bounded by language, for culture and spirit are heavily mutual.

Thus, the fate of a nation/species/small group is partially dependent/influenced by the structure of its language.
