Taoism of Democracy

created 2004-08-03 12:54:53

Perhaps Politics Vs The Tao is a misnomerial title for a page, and to make progress we should actually concentrate on growing Politics from the Tao. It seems that I spend a fair bit of time trying to work from the current UK political situation, picking holes in it and attempting to find repairs to it in a patchwork-like solution. But such a method can only end up in more leaks. To introduce real change, a more wholesome approach to politics should be taken, and I have chosen Taoism as the foundation for this thinking.

Much of the surviving philosphical Taoism came about at the time of emperors and dynasties, and so the democratic ideals we know today influenced neither the systems and infrastructures in place, nor the approach to governance that the Taoists advocated. However, this doesn't mean that it is not relevant, merely that it should be applied cautiously to the structures we have today.

For instance, there is still a necessary boundary between the governed, and the governing, at least in useful conceptual terms if not strictly hierarchical ones. By this, I mean that we could consider today's hierarchy, with it's consultations and such processes, as much flatter and more integrated than an empirical approach, wherein rulers are dictated through bloodlines and invasion.
