Truth and Opinion in the Modern Media

(Up to: Technology Vs Evolution Truth )

Forget Google leading to less book research being done. Is there a real possibility that the sheer amount of information available to us now, on the net in addition to on TV, in the papers, etc. has lead to a "culture of truncation"?

By this, I mean that the majority of people, especially with lifestyles that are getting busier and busier, have less time to take in more information, and so the only way to deal with this is through aggregation services such as news.google.com. But also, I think there may be a trend to restrict the information being taken in to just the headlines/summaries being presented through this aggregation.

The danger of this, of course, is that a lot of one-sided opinion tends to come out through headlines, whether intentional or not. This applies especially to any kind of "quoted news", or anything being claimed by a particular party. In a day when lawsuits fill the press, this blurring between claims and the reporting of fact can lend a strange edge of truthfulness to what should remain as purely alleged. While the story may contain counter-arguments and opinions, and other insightful stuff, I wonder if the "quick n dirty" approach of today's media means that it is ignored far more than it should be.

It would probably be fine if people didn't judge things based on a few sentences. But apparently they do (though currently dropping at time of writing, lol).
