Ubiquitous Memory

Since my A-levels I have often wondered what the point of exams was. 90% of the subject matter in examinations is forgettable, if only because you can look the details up very quickly from an external resource when needed.

Take Java programming, for example. My University exams concentrated at times on how particular methods were formed, et al. Nowadays though, if I don't know something, it takes me less than a minute to bring it up in a webpage.

Our memory is, and has been for a long time, externalised to a large extent. Where shoudl we draw the line between what we must remember, and what is fien to look up?
